While serving on a jury panel in 2018, Dan Cooper recognized he needed to pursue legal recourse for his own case following violated in the year 2004.

“When I heard the individuals giving evidence, I could literally see myself in the exact position,” he explained post forfeiting his privacy rights.

Subsequent to the hearing, the now 39-year-old from the town of Watton opted to notify local authorities again to disclose his assailant.

On 27 February 2024, two decades post the violation, the convicted individual from Oulton Broad, Suffolk was handed eight years in jail after being declared culpable of dual offenses of violation and one count of assault by penetration.

At the time, Dan had been 17 when he met then 21-year-old the perpetrator in the city of Norwich in the year 2004, and their encounter developed into his earliest partnership.

One Saturday night in May of that year, the couple had gone to a barbecue when Gilder consumed excessive alcohol and requested Dan to transport him home.

Near 12 AM, the individual instructed Dan to stop the car on a quiet road adjacent to the local hospital in the Norfolk area.

Gilder attacked Dan and left him with serious internal injuries which resulted in him being admitted to hospital thrice that summer.

Traumatized, Dan was found a way to take the perpetrator home before going back to his family residence.

“I stayed lying down for an extended period reflecting, ‘what has just happened? what was that?’,” he stated.

In September that year, Dan contacted the police and detailed the assault.

The survivor stated he had submitted a report at the time, but it was not advanced any further because he was “very ill at that point”.

His grandparents and other kin had no idea he was a member of the LGBTQ+ community, he added.

“Life was different back then,” he said.

Currently, Dan works as a project manager for the public administration, but he previously worked in a correctional facility, where he said he would often suppress emotions when prisoners discussed their own abuse.

He further stated he was physically confronted on the job, which also caused recurring memories.

“Subsequently, during jury duty. Recollections of the violation again. It was a unceasing pattern that had to end,” he remarked.

The witnesses who helped obtain a guilty verdict in the 2018 court case in which he was a panel member were “inspirational”, according to Dan.

“It was profoundly impactful to see them stepping forward and giving evidence and handling the tough interrogations being thrown their way,” he commented.

“I was working at the airport as an immigration officer at this time, and I had to take several weeks away for health reasons.

“It was then that I again disclosed [the attack] to the law enforcement and I requested to proceed with it for me, which they said they could do,” he concluded.

Disturbing Testimony

Law enforcement officers from the authorities were assigned to Dan’s case in 2018, and it advanced to a formal accusation and court case at Norwich Crown Court in November 2023.

In his victim impact statement, Dan described how he had been identified with complex post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) associated with the violation.

“I endured, and presently suffer, regular thoughts of self-harm,” he stated.

One in four of female adults and approximately 6% of male adults have been affected by sexual violence, or attempted sexual assault, based on the national crime survey.

An investigation found that nearly half of a group of 180 who were subjected to disturbing content in trials reported symptoms consistent with PTSD.

“Previous traumatic events, psychological challenges and immediate stress responses during a hearing can intensify psychological responses,” experts highlighted.

In 2004, Dan’s mother approached the perpetrator when he visited her son in the hospital after Dan had informed her what had transpired.

“There was a rage similar to flames within me. I was deeply enraged,” she remembered.

Gilder left and it was the last time she encountered him.

In conversation with her son, she remarked: “I experienced great pride of you for adhering to what you believed in and pursuing it to the end. It was justice for you. You’d strived intensely.

“Mentally it had really taken a toll on you and we could observe how you had difficulties.”

He mentioned his existing position as an on-call firefighter for Norfolk Fire and Rescue Service had helped him with the recovery journey.

“Assisting the local residents has provided me with something to focus on and live for,” he said.

The survivor noted he now cared for his three dogs, cycling and journeys.

From May onward he has initiated production of videos about his journey and shares them on social media, where he now has 12,000 subscribers on the video app.

“It’s helped a lot of people. The number of direct communications I’ve had to express it’s helped others is significant,” he stated. “{I’ve got to do
