The Iconic Puzzle Game Didn't Win at This Gaming Ceremony — An Additional Classification Could Fix That

Whenever a major prize-giving event approaches, one notices a clamor for introducing fresh award types to honor unsung work and fill the spirits of fans who have specialized interests.

My colleague previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. So would strategy board titles, which is a passionate advocate's mission. Yet I need to apologize in advance for pushing forward since similar to blinkered fanatics, there's a strong justification supporting my request stands as crucial and important of all. This is the request: There should be a classification for brain-teasing titles.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Classifying creative works defies precise measurement; it’s very subjective, and it will always spark debates and end in fuzzy definitions. This explains why movie academies steer clear of genre categories. Yet it remains an unavoidable compromise for the industry of video games, which are so diverse they barely qualify a single creative category.

For the full spectrum of interactive entertainment excellence to receive acknowledgment, and to ensure all game types to have a chance for representation, genre categories are essential.

Existing Game Classification System

Leading game ceremonies currently feature award types recognizing Action, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these six categories successfully include many game types, making space possible for numerous titles.

Different situation exists for puzzle games. No suitable classification appears to put them. Think about these outstanding current releases, showing diverse approaches: the architectural riddles from a specific release, the pulse-pounding block-matching from another release, thought-provoking social scenarios in another game. What category would fit them within current classifications? Nowhere, that’s where.

The Representation Problem

Many instances occur of brilliant puzzle games published annually without proper recognition in entertainment awards, unless they happen to qualify classification types such as Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, or the extremely competitive independent game categories.

  • An iconic brain-teaser received no recognition completely that year
  • Another imaginative release was excluded that year
  • Popular arranging title was overlooked that year
  • Just some brain-teasers barely qualified for independent or mobile categories

Significance of Puzzle Games

Commonly they're modest productions, but the art in brain-teasers is of massive significance. Well-known matching games count as the most-played games globally maintaining this status for an extended period.

The famous puzzle experience challenges popular creative games claiming status as best-selling game of all time; it additionally competes as greatest title ever. Puzzle games are foundational for gaming as medium, and they are in conversation across multiple categories.

Proposal and Rationale

Logic titles wouldn't face such difficulty. You could fill five nominees engaging, different, qualified experiences each ceremony simply — actually, with challenge, given the need to exclude so many good games out.

Restating the point, these represent titles lacking appropriate categories at major gaming awards. Puzzle game makers are working at the challenging frontier game development, creating some of essential manifestations of the video game form. Similar to film action specialists, they merit acknowledgment. Let’s not keep them waiting decades.
