The Premier Record of the Year: Rosalía's Masterpiece Secures the Top Place.

At first glance, this album might appear more like a difficult academic examination than a new popular music project by an artist who just had a last single featured an international K-pop icon. Divided into four different movements and voiced in 13 languages, it is a breathtaking orchestral-influenced opus exploring female mystery, religious ascent, and bodily transformation, often via the lens of various women saints. The dissolution of a love affair—a theme treated with raw honesty on another major 2025 album—soars upwards here, carried by the lush presence of a major symphony orchestra and work from a Pulitzer-winning composer within an extensive list of collaborators. Its sheer audacity alone renders the efforts of contemporary artists seem quite small.

Rising Above Academic Pretense

The fact that this album manages to avoid overly intellectual chin-stroking is almost a miracle, with sole credit going to Rosalía. Although this is not her first project to fuse the past with modern styles, the scale are far greater on Lux, with the balancing act more precarious. What really elevates her fourth album, outside of its complex melodies, dense compositions, and inherent theatricality, is a core spirit of playfulness. Similar to the legendary artist during her height, there is a captivating sense to Rosalía's voice which sweeps the listener up in its tornado. When she is breaking your heart apart, you still want to be alongside her for the ride.

A Signature Moment of Joy

That playful energy comes forth clearly on a stirring piano-led song inspired by Saint Clare. It bathes in a sorrowful whirlpool for more than four minutes. Then, everything drops away, and we hear a gleeful laugh and a declaration prior to a hilariously over-the-top orchestral crescendo thuds in with cartoonish impact. The track immediately segues into the wild single featuring galloping strings, a powerful choral group, and a surprise appearance from the artist herself.

"The magic of Lux is that the listener rarely exactly understand—or even want to know—what it is going next."

Almost every track concludes in a completely different place from where it started. A track explores the fleeting nature of celebrity with a featherlight orchestration before disintegrating in digital cacophony. Another, a song that recalls the artist's previous trap-infused style begins off moody and sinister, featuring menacing beats, before fluttering traditional rhythms and a heavenly choir arrive to soften the song's rough edges.

The Balance Of Experiment & Accessibility

A key achievement of Lux is navigating the gap of bold experimentation and broad appeal. This is little coincidence that the album has achieved the artist's highest-charting work to crack the upper reaches of key charts: its heart contains a collection of truly undeniable hits. A song performed entirely in the English language builds around a chorus that feels to collect more and more nagging melodies as it spirals skyward. This feat gets repeated on another expansive track that expands and constricts, weaving multiple tunes as an intricate tapestry.

  • A dance-infused song seduces with its playful, Disney-adjacent drama and an anthemic hook.
  • Lyrically, it shares with pop culture honesty of other breakup songs, lambasting a former lover labeled an "psychological terrorist".
  • Throughout these tracks, the vocals have a painted-on smile, like a fairy-tale figure concealing a knife: "Top prize in acting like a scoundrel / You've the podium of letdown."

A Maximalist Feast for the Ears

Lux is popular music on a grand level, an ambitious grasp for capital-A artistry amid of looming AI-generated sameness. It eschews solipsism for glorious elevation, crafting a dramatic spectacle that skillfully manages its built-in excess. It is an abundant source of hidden treasure that takes time to completely mine but never feels like a chore. Where other major pop albums of the year seemed like feasting on scraps, Lux offers a lavish banquet at which the guests at the table, some tipsy on sacred drink, flutter between discussions about historical figures, the profound sensation of soul-shattering grief, and shared stories about useless men. It is a contemporary musical from pop's truly endlessly creative visionary.
